The VIRGO Myth

Of all the goddesses during the Golden Age, Astraea stood out as one of the most beautiful and revered. She was the daughter of Zeus and Themis and known as the Goddess of Innocence and Purity. She had a gentle nature and saw the best in all creatures.
At this time of the Golden Age the gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece lived on the Earth. Astraea loved the Earth and all the wonders in it. Zeus, however, regarded mortal man as a crude and coarse creature and had little time for them. The Titan, Prometheus, who had created man out of clay, felt responsible for mankind and wished to help them when he could. Risking Zeus’ wrath he stole fire from the gods and taught man how to use it.
When Zeus found out what the Titan had done he was furious. He chained Prometheus to the summit of the Caucasus mountains and left him there for 30,000 years.
But Zeus was still not satisfied he wished to make mankind suffer as well. Together the gods fashioned the first woman out of clay. Athene breathed air into her, Hermes taught her guile and deception, Aphrodite showed her how to be irresistible to men. Clothed in a gown of silver she was presented to Zeus who named her Pandora. He gave her a casket of burnished copper, forbidding her to ever open it. To make sure she obeyed his word he commanded the brother of Prometheus, the young Epimetheus, to marry Pandora. Together they went to live amongst man and Epimethius carefully locked the precious casket and put the key securely on his belt.
One day when her husband was asleep, Pandora crept into his room and stole the key. Carefully placing the box on the table she gently turned the key. Hesitating for a brief moment, she lifted the lid. Immediately there was a strange rushing sound as if a great wind was escaping. Out of the casket flew all the evils that still trouble mankind today – poverty, crime, distrust, sickness, greed and spite. The evils swiftly scattered around the world and the life of man soon became a constant struggle to survive against all kinds of hardships. Zeus’ revenge on man was now complete. Pandora sprang forward and slammed the lid shut, inside crouching in a corner, was trapped Hope.
Zeus had not triumphed completely for as long as there is Hope there is a future for mankind.The Immortals, seeing Earth becoming corrupt departed for Olympus, where they could watch man from a safe distance. The last to leave was Astraea. Tears fell from her eyes as she gazed on her beloved Earth becoming tainted with evil. She refused to live with the other gods who had ruined her world. She took herself away to live in the heavens where every night, as the constellation Virgo, she stares down at the Earth, hopeful that one day mankind will become pure again and she can return home.
