PISCES the Sign & its Symbols.
HE SIGN
The main ruling planets of Pisces are Jupiter, the planet of optimism and generosity and Neptune, the planet of dreams and sensitivity. Pisces is a mutable, feminine water sign whose positive traits indicate a compassionate, understanding nature along with creative and mystical tendencies, while more challenging traits include self-pity, secrecy and a weak will.
THE SYMBOLS
The astrological symbol for Pisces is represented by two curved lines joined in the middle by a straight line. There are two explanations for this. Either it is two fish swimming in opposite directions, which has been slightly adapted over the years, or it is two linked staffs of Neptune. Certain herbs, spices, flowers, trees, shrubs, gemstones, metals and animals have long been associated with particular signs of the zodiac. Several plants, for example, have lucky connections with Pisces and, it is said, they are most effective when picked on a day that is influenced by their ruling planet. These include the water lily, which signifies purity of heart; sage, a good herb for treating sores and mouth irritations, as well as warts, epilepsy and measles; the poppy, whose various colours represent differing aspects of life. Red symbolising pleasure, white consolation and yellow wealth and success. The poppy also has some wonderful local names such as Earaches, Fireflout, Old Womans Petticoats and Sleepyhead. Gemstones linked to Pisces include opals, derived from the Greek word opallios meaning change of colour and they are said to possess all the virtues of the stones whose colours appear in it; moonstone, which, placed in the mouth during full moon, enabled lovers to foretell the future of their relationship; amethyst, which makes the wearer gentle and amiable. Often amethyst is given as a symbol of sincerity, security, and peace of mind. Animal connections include all creatures that live in the sea.
THE PISCES NEEDLEPOINT DESIGN
Motifs have been selected from all the different astrological aspects of Pisces and include: the central image of a pair of entwined fish; the astrological symbol which sits on top of the fish; in the corners of the inner border sit the roman numeral XII (for the twelfth house), a snowflake representing water and a moon symbolising the Tarot card associated with Pisces; in the four corners, the symbols of the ruling planets, Jupiter and Neptune, a water lily, a sprig of sage and an amethyst.
