The Capricorn Myth
Unlike many of the other constellations there does not seem to be a particular myth associated with Capricorn. The origins are many and varied. Here are a few of the possible explanations.
It is one of the most mysterious and ancient of all the constellations. It was known in Pre-Babylonian times as the god Ea. Ea was of vast intellect, the lord of the sacred eye. Ea has appeared on earth four times to educate man in the art of civilization and each time he appeared in human form he wore a cloak with the tails of a fish. Ea saved mankind from a great flood, the same one described in the Bible as the flood of Noah. After educating man and as darkness fell, Ea returned to the waters.
Capricornus is a Latin compound of ‘she-goat’ (capra) and "horn" (cornus), which derives from the original Greek Aegocerus, ‘goat-horned.’ It is also traditionally depicted as being a "sea goat" (a goat with a fish tail). Aegocerus accompanied Zeus when battling the Titans on Mount Ada. He allegedly invented the trumpet and then blew it in battle which caused panic among the Titans and they fled.
There is a rather feeble attempt in this version of the story to reconcile the "sea-goat" by saying that Aegocerus discovered the trumpet in the sea. The depiction of a sea-goat appears to be derived from an earlier Egyptian source.
Some sources have associated Capricorn with the goat that fed the infant Zeus while he was being secretly raised on Crete, the goat’s horn became the original "cornucopia" (horn of plenty).
Capricorn has also been linked with Pan the God of shepherds and flocks. The son of Hermes and a nymph. Pan was born with the legs and horns of a goat, which caused his own mother to spurn him. Nor was the adult god any more popular with the nymphs. His lust for the nymphs, naiads and dryads is legendary. The nymph, Syrnix, was the namesake for Pan’s reed-pipe because she was turned into a reed to escape the amorous advances of the Goat God.
The nymphs Pitys and Echo, were also made famous when they fled from Pan. For their insolence Pitys was turned into a pine tree and Echo was transformed into a voice that could only repeat the last word spoken to it.
Pan’s name is the basis for the word ‘panic’.
There are two differing explanations for this. The first, another version of the earlier story, is that he was present when Zeus defeated the Titans of Kronos and claimed that it was his terrifying war cry that caused the Titans to flee. The second is that he was responsible for the noises in the woods that scared many a poor, passing traveller on dark nights.
